As a former Head of English at one of the most academically-successful private schools in the UK, and with 15 years of experience of teaching, I am well-placed to help students of every ability and level with their English studies.
If one of my services is of interest, please get in touch for a conversation about whether I can be of help.
How it works
Tutoring is offered solely over Zoom. I work mostly in the evening although, in the run-up to exams, some daytime sessions may be exceptionally considered. Zoom links are sent to parents only, who are also welcome on the call if they wish,.
Tutoring sessions are one hour in duration. Please contact me for availability.

English A Level and IB Support
Over the years, I have taught the OCR, Edexcel and Eduqas syllabuses for English Literature, as well as IB English A.
The study of English at sixthform is a great adventure, but it does require a significant development of skills from GCSE. You will need to refine your close-reading and analytical abilities, understand the relevance of a range of contexts and apply different critical readings. Your essays become much more complex: a wonderful opportunity but also quite daunting for many, given the amount of organisation involved. For many students., the coursework they write for the A level will be the closest piece of academic work to university level that they complete.
Having guided many students through this process, I can provide help and support to those who are struggling, or, for those who want to take their studies further.

GCSE and IGCSE preparation
I have many years experience teaching both IGCSE and GCSE English Language and LIterature and can offer support for all elements.
For many students, the English Language and Literature GCSEs present unique challenges. The English Language GCSEs in particular are complex examinations with a huge amount to do in the time allotted. For the English Literature GCSE, you have whole texts that you need to prepare, as well as having to plan essay responses in a very short time. You might have coursework that you're uncertain how to approach, or you cannot see a way in to Unseen texts in the exam.
In all these cases, you're not alone: these are the learning opportunities that English provides. I can support your developing skills to help you find your way through.

Oxbridge and Entrance Examinations
At one end of the spectrum, I have successfully supported several students in their applications to Oxford, Cambridge and other competitive universities. I can provide effective interview preparation and ELAT practice. I am also very happy to chat with you about whether English at university might be the subject for you and what benefits it brings.
At the other end of the spectrum, I have in the past set 11+, 13+ and 16+ admissions tests and conducted admissions interviews at several schools. I can provide guidance, preparation and practice so that you make the best impression.

Teacher Training and Professional Development
As a former Head of Department, one of the privileges of the role has been helping teachers in the early stages of their careers. It is a profession that requires vocation, endurance and skills, and one that can - in the wrong circumstances - feel overwhelming and isolating. I have acted as a mentor to PGCE students and new teachers, as well as delivering INSET and CPD to more experienced staff. If any of my experience might be helpful to you, please get in contact.
